The book started with the main character’s brother dying. Elana wanted to save him, but they were poor and couldn’t afford healing services for the brother. However, Elana had a secret: she could become a player in the Grand Game. She determined that this was the only way to earn enough money to save her brother’s life, even though she despised players. The story was her struggle to get a cure for her brother.

Review

I enjoyed this story, but I didn’t feel like the main character was as well-developed as the main character in The Grand Game series. I wish Elana had more development through the story.

I felt like the story was too short; it was described as a novella but it felt shorter than a novella. I wish it had more of what happened after Elana cured her brother. Were there any repercussions? What did her brother think about Elana becoming a player? What happened after she became a player? Did the day to day rules she was living under change ?

As a side note, I thought it was interesting that Rohan M. Vider worked on this book as well as Tom Elliot. Tom Elliot is a new author for me, but I have read most of what Rohan M. Vider has written and enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend reading his books.
