Boyd was in the process of traveling to the people who wanted him to turn himself in, killing monsters along the way, when a group of five Vigils captured him. They started escorting him to the city he needed to be in.
Once at the city, Boyd was judged and found innocent. He was assigned a trainer, and discovered that there was a monster killing people in the city.
Boyd started training. On the side, he started looking into the monster haunting the city.
Boyd was then taken on a training mission with other Vigils. They traveled around the land, completing different bounties.
They got back to the city, and discovered that the monster that was hunting in the city had attacked the prince.
Boyd did some more digging, and figured out what was going on. There was a big fight at the end.
Review
I enjoyed the way the book felt like a mystery book as Boyd was trying to figure out what was going on.
I didn’t like how the book would frequently summarize what happened instead of actually spelling it out. For example, when Boyd and the other Vigils were traveling to different bounties and doing them for training, the characters’ actions were only summarized. I wish the author had actually shown the reader what had happened, if only for some of the encounters. Especially because one of them sounded hilarious. The same thing (summarizing) happened at the end of the book. It would have been better if the author didn’t summarize so much in the book.
I liked how the author offered little tidbits of information in the beginning of the book that seemed completely irrelevant, but actually turned out to be really important at the end.
I like how the author made it seem like the characters weren’t going to be successful at the end. It was effective foreshadowing.
